The piece is based on a famous 17th century work by the Florentine artist Carlo Dolci often referred to as the "Madonna del Dito" (Madonna of the Finger) because of how she holds her cloak. Dolci was born and educated in Florence, and is considered to be one of the greatest painters of the 17th century. His portraits focus on sacred subjects, many of whom were paintings of Mary. The portrait
