Wilkes fought for the south in the Civil War, and was killed in action at the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861. While researching I read that Wilkes wore this same uniform when he fought for the Confederacy in the war, and in fact, based on the style of this preserver, which dates to 1861 1866, I believe
